Wednesday was the last day of class, and the last peer presentations as well. In saying this I was glad to have been introduced to another style of inquiry that can be utilized in a variety of lessons. The instructor began the lesson by showing us a small clip of a man attempting to break the world record for most claps in a minute. She showed us 4.5 seconds of this video and then instructed us to record our observations on the 'notice and wonder' chart. I had seen these charts in an online forum before, but had never used them in a classroom setting. I was intrigued by the use of the charts and the discussion that was created. She then also asked us to predict whether or not he would beat the world record of 721 claps in a minute. Many of us used reasonable strategies to predict this outcome that included trying to count the claps per second or the total number of claps in the 4.5 seconds.
Once we had all recorded our predictions on the sheet we then watched the remainder of the video and were asked if we thought our prediction was reasonable. This would allow students to demonstrate their understanding of mathematical processes and theories. They can show connections to topics outside of mathematics as well. For example, my group factored in fatigue as we did not think he could hold the same pace for a minute straight. In the end this prediction was correct as he did miss some beats near the end.
After this activity I began to think about how I could use these 'notice and wonder' charts in my future as an educator. I feel as thought it was a highly successful tool in creating discussion and allowed students to either share their thoughts with the group, or record them on their own sheet for later. I think they could apply in a variety of lessons in the math classroom, as well as a variety of other subject areas as well. I could not help but connect this to my first teachable, Physical Education. I can see myself using these charts to analyze the mechanics of a specific skill. Showing two videos side by side and allowing students to 'notice and wonder' about the differences in that skill. We could then talk about which style may be more beneficial and how the mechanics could be changed to reach the highest level of success. Overall, these 'notice and wonder' charts will be useful in my future as I can utilize them in every aspect of my classroom.

Bringing Physical Activity into the Math class
Last Wednesday night I was a
student in a peer lesson that focused on teaching grade 9 using a variety of
teaching styles and resources. As a Physical Education
major I have spent the majority of my time in schools in the gymnasium and have not observed many mathematics classrooms. In saying this, I was intrigued by my peers’
ability to incorporate a wide range of resources and technologies into their
lessons, most of which I had never seen before.
Specifically,
there was one lesson that focused on rate of change and graphing these
relationships. The lesson was presented using an instrument called a CBR. This
attached to a graphing calculator and allowed us to track our movement within
the classroom. We were told to get up and attempt to make each of the graphs
that we were given on the sheet. This not only forced us to get out of our
seats, but also brought physical activity into the mathematics setting. This
cross-curriculum activity increased the opportunity for student engagement while creating a student-centred lesson.
During the
activity I completely lost track of time. I was engaged in what I was doing and
was focused on completing each and every given graph. I learned what slowing
down, speeding up and standing still all looked like on a graph, while being
physically active. As a physical education teacher it was awesome to experience
movement in a setting that would typically not include activity. I was
impressed by the CBR’s and their ability to track speed and location of a
student in the class. Not only did this activity improve my interest in the
lesson, but physical activity has also been proven to increase blood flow to the
brain. This would then allow me to process information and solve problems more
quickly after being active.
In the
future, I would love to include activities like this in my classroom. They allow
students to get up and move around, refresh their state of mind and learn in a
less formal setting. This may also create a more inclusive environment for students
who feel the need to move in order to focus, as they will no longer feel like
the center of attention.

Project Based Learning and Wicked Questions
At the end of my last posting I
briefly described a grade twelve sports leadership class that I thoroughly
enjoyed due to the nature and application of the assessment tasks. During the
last blog I focused on the elements of rich performance assessment tasks and
the notion of including the students opinions and real life applications to the
assessments. In saying this, the notion of rich performance tasks can be
further explained through the theory of project-based learning. During this sports
leadership class our main goal was to design a series of field trips that focused
on making grade eight students feel more comfortable on their first day of
grade nine.
In saying this, the class was built upon the theories of project-based learning. Project based learning can bring real life problems into the classroom. It encourages students to be engaged in their learning and allows them to understand the subject matter, by understanding each of its individual parts (Tascı, 2015). It has been proven that project based learning can improve the learning of students since it focuses on the real world settings and ensures that each students is focused on their task at hand. It also allows them to work at their own comfort level and individualizes educational experiences (Galvan, & Coronado, 2014). In saying this, as students we were encouraged to focus our event on an aspect of the school that we felt comfortable working within. For example, my small peer group focused mostly on athletics so we decided to focus our portion of the final trip on the physical education resources available at our high school. Our project was based upon allowing the students to find and utilize each of the facilities. This project based learning style was beneficial since it did not have one correct answer in mind, encouraged us to gain knowledge while participating and ensured we were focused on the real world problem at hand.

This notion of an unsolvable
problem can be related to the grade twelve class since our final goal was to
make the grade eight students feel comfortable during their first day of grade
nine. The Globe and Mail suggests that 1 in 4 grade nine students
becomes very stressed about finding their new classrooms, making new friends,
and finding their lockers. In saying this, our wicked problem was the concept
of why grade nine students feel uncomfortable during their first days and how
it can be solved.
In my future as an educator, I believe it will be beneficial to begin each unit with a wicked problem. This problem will then lead into a series of project based learning lessons in which students will solve a less complex problem. These solutions will then be combined to meet the learning objectives of the entire unit in the classroom.

Rich Performance Assessment Tasks
A rich performance assessment task is a task used to demonstrate that students have learned the know, do and be of that unit.
There may be a variety of assessment tasks that act as formative assessment
during the unit, but there is generally a final assessment task as well. In
order to create a rich performance assessment task the task must meet some of
the following criteria.

This video stresses the need for inclusion of the students in both the planning stages, and learning stages in order to ensure
that they know what the expectations are during the course. This notion of
involving students in their assessment is further explained by the three stages
of assessment. Purcell (2014) proposes that the three stages of assessment
include: grounding the assessment in real world applications, involving
the students in the assessment and allowing the students to be engaged with the
feedback. All of these stages meet the previously mentioned criteria of
creating a rich performance assessment task.
